Most of the energy tends to go into negative reviews. Yet on most Google profiles, positive reviews are the majority, and they are what your future customers scroll through first. Replying to them, and doing it well, is one of the simplest ways to show you are an attentive business.
Here is how to reply to a positive review without falling back on a stock phrase, followed by 30 example replies grouped by situation, ready to adapt to your business.
Why reply to positive reviews
A customer who takes the time to leave 5 stars is doing you a favour. Thanking them publicly means:
- acknowledging them: they feel heard, and a customer who feels recognised is more likely to come back and recommend you;
- speaking to future customers: a profile where every customer gets a reply shows a business that cares about everyone, not just the unhappy ones;
- balancing your replies: if you only answer complaints, those are what stand out visually on your profile;
- adding substance: your reply can mention a service, a speciality or something new, in your own words.
Google says, in its advice for business profiles, that replying to reviews shows you value your customers and their feedback. No need to expect more than that: the main benefit is human.
Avoiding the copy-paste effect
The classic trap: “Thanks for your review, see you soon!” under every 5-star review. By the third one, readers have worked out that nobody is really reading. Three habits are enough to avoid it.
Vary your openings
Keep a dozen different openers to hand and rotate them:
- “Thank you, [first name]!”
- “What a pleasure to read this, [first name].”
- “Hi [first name], your message has done the rounds of the team.”
- “Thanks for the 5 stars, [first name]!”
- “Hi [first name], so glad that…”
- “A big thank you, [first name].”
- “Hi [first name], this is exactly what we love to hear.”
Pick up a specific detail
This is the most important rule. The dish, the haircut, the job, the room with a view, the adviser’s first name: quoting something from the review proves you read it. One sentence is enough.
Now and then, add something useful
Something new, summer opening hours, a service the customer may not know about. Slip it in discreetly and not every time: a reply should never read like an ad.
Finally, two rules to keep in mind: never offer anything in return for a review, and don’t ask only your happy customers for reviews. Details in our article on customer review regulations.

29. “Hi [first name], thanks for your feedback. We’ve noted your comment about [reservation] and shared it with the team. Hope to see you again. [Signature]”
30. “Thank you, [first name]! About [reservation, e.g. the wait], it’s something we’ve identified and [step taken]. Thanks for your understanding, and see you soon. [Signature]”
Mistakes to avoid
- The same sentence everywhere: it gets noticed from the second reply.
- Heavy advertising: “Get 20% off…” under a review is out of place.
- Private information: don’t mention the order, the file or the reason for a medical appointment, even to say thanks.
- Overdoing it: three exclamation marks and five emojis per reply undermine sincerity.
- Forgetting to sign: a signature makes the reply human.

Frequently asked questions
Should I reply to every positive review?
Ideally, yes, including reviews with no text. A short reply is enough. Consistency is what counts: a profile where every customer gets a reply shows an attentive business.
What should I reply to a 5-star review with no comment?
A brief, warm thank-you with the first name: “Thank you, [first name], for the 5 stars, hope to see you again!” You can invite them to say what they liked best, without pushing.
Can I always use the same reply template?
Best avoided. Keep a structure (thanks, detail, invitation), but vary the opening and pick up something specific to each review. Readers quickly spot identical replies.
Can I thank a customer with a gift for their review?
Not in return for the review. Offering a discount or gift in exchange for a review, or for a positive one, is prohibited. You can, however, thank them warmly and publicly in your reply.
How soon should I reply to a positive review?
Within a few days, ideally within the week. Negative reviews remain the priority (48 hours), but a positive review left unanswered for months gives an impression of inattention.
Can an AI reply to my positive reviews?
Yes, if it genuinely engages with each review and respects your tone. With Replik, the AI reads your website, follows your tone and signature settings, and suggests a reply for every new review; by default, nothing is published without your approval. The free audit shows you the result on one of your recent reviews.
